Upon researching holidays around the world, one central idea was the same across them all - the importance of family. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or another holiday, you’re likely to be planning a family gathering with those you love most.

As I look back on my childhood, I can still vividly remember the holidays being seasons of joy, wonder, and magic. The Christmas magic feeling started (for me) on Thanksgiving Day. Every Thanksgiving, our holiday tradition is to watch The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as we prepare the big meal. There are two floats that I must see on tv; Tom Turkey and Santa.

When you think about it, creating magic for your family is all about knowing what makes them happy. You can start holiday family traditions anytime - it’s never too late. Whether you have older or younger children, traditions can come in all sizes! My research resulted in many, many tradition ideas, but I will list a few of my favorites.

Make A Traditions Notebook

Remembering every tradition can be taxing on the mind. Instead of trying to remember every single detail, you can write it down in a notebook. A simple college ruled notebook will work. If you want something a bit fancier, you can get a personalized notebook from websites like Erin Condren and Plum Paper (among many others). I like to organize my traditions notebook by month so it’s a snapshot of all the holidays.

Go On A Holiday Lights Tour (free option)

Grab your family and jump in the car to gaze at local neighborhood holiday lights (free)! You may know an area to visit, but if not, check out The Original Christmas Light Finder to find the closest display to your home.

Walking light tours are memorable family outings! Many botanical gardens decorate during the holidays, but be sure to do your research in advance as tickets usually need to be booked in advance.

Cook Or Bake Together (practically free)

Pinterest is a fun journey to finding a holiday recipe that your family will look forward to every year! If you’re a parent of littles, consider purchasing a Toddler Tower for your kitchen. It’s the best and safest way to have your little helper mixing, rolling, and stirring up fun!

Break Out The Photo Album (free)

All the photos you’ve saved can tell stories every year. Cuddle up on the couch by the fire with your loved ones as you travel down memory lane.

Family Storytime (free)

Choose a book that is meaningful to your family. Read it during your holiday celebrations. Get the little ones involved with movements and sound effects!

The holiday season is fleeting. Take time to settle in with your loved ones and make traditions that bring warmth to your home and heart.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season!
