Where to See Cherry Blossoms

If you’re looking to view the magnificent early-spring blooms that have made our region famous without trekking all the way to DC, then you're in luck; there are several places to spot cherry blossoms on this side of the Potomac. Here are some of our favorites:

Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Vienna, VA - Every spring, dozens of cherry blossom trees burst into vibrant shades of pink along the banks of this regional park’s charming pond (Admission fee applies).

Founders Park, Alexandria, VA - This riverfront oasis in the heart of Old Town Alexandria provides a peaceful place to rest, picnic, and see some gorgeous blooms (Free).

Van Gogh Bridge, Lake Anne, Reston, VA - The cherry blossoms surrounding this picturesque footbridge will make you feel like you’ve stepped into one of its namesake’s famous paintings (Free).

Where to See Bluebells

With a name like Virginia Bluebell, it’s not surprising that these tiny, delicate flowers can be found throughout our region during their March-April blooming period. We suggest searching for their conical blossoms in the following places:

Manassas National Battlefield Park, Centreville, VA - Not only is the 1.3-mile Stone Bridge Loop a family-friendly TRACK trail, but it is also an ideal bluebell spot. This upcoming family hiking event at the Stone Bridge will offer great opportunities for bluebell viewing (Free).

Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, VA - The 1.5 mile Bluebell Trail is a lovely year-round hike, but it feels truly magical when its majestic blue carpet reappears each spring. Check the park’s calendar for multiple bluebell-themed activities (Free; some programs require a fee).

Riverbend Park, Great Falls, VA - visitors can explore Riverbend Park’s Potomac-adjacent bluebells throughout the blooming season, but special programming is available during the park’s annual Bluebell Festival, (Free; paid admission required for festival)

Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area, Nokesville, VA - Prince William County’s untouched hidden gem boasts a plentiful collection of bluebells. Consider visiting during the Bluebell Festival at no extra cost (Free).

Shenandoah River State Park, Bentonville, VA - Though this state park is home to more than 25 miles of trails, none is more colorful than the one-mile-long Bluebell Trail each spring. Celebrate the arrival of the lovely flowers with the park’s annual  Bluebell Festival (Parking fee applies).

Where to Pick Your Own Flowers

If you long to take a gorgeous bouquet of freshly-picked flowers home with you, we’ve got you covered. Each of the following locations offers seasonal flower-picking opportunities for a nominal fee:

Burnside Farms, Nokesville, VA - Though famous for their springtime tulips, Burnside also offers spring daffodils and summer sunflowers, in addition to a children’s recreation area and weekend food options.

Seven Oaks Lavender Farm, Catlett, VA - After a fragrant pick-your-own-lavender experience, indulge in lavender cupcakes and lemonade from the farm’s shop while your children enjoy the little playhouse.

Fields of Flowers, Purcelville, VA - You’ll want to visit the Field of Flowers multiple times to see all it has to offer. More than 20 types of flowers bloom across three different seasons at this private farm that operates on an honor system.

Hope Flower Farm and Winery, Waterford, VA - In addition to sampling robust beverage offerings, visitors can take advantage of special pick-your-own days and several opportunities to purchase pre-cut stems of tulips, peonies, dahlias, and more.

Great Country Farms, Bluemont, VA - Known for its amazing playscape and extensive pick-your-own fruit and vegetable options, Great Country Farms also opens a sunflower picking field each summer. They even host a sunflower photo contest!
