Surviving Holiday Gatherings with Young Children

Holiday gatherings are a time to bring family and friends together. Sometimes, that’s easier said than done. If you’re a parent of littles, you know all too well that holiday traveling and overnight stays can be overwhelming. Set yourself up for success as you plan your holiday gatherings this year with mama hacks to save everyone’s sanity (and patience).

1. The Kids Table: You may choose to set-up a separate kids table for the young children at your holiday gatherings. Kids can be kids (within reason) at their own special table while you enjoy some adult conversations at the main table. I like to think of the kids table as a “right of passage” if you will. Children know that one day they will grow up to eat there. This is a simple kids table if you’re in the market for one. Activity tables and even coffee tables can serve as a kids dining table depending on the size of your group.

2. Naptime for All: After feasting on a big holiday meal, you may feel like taking a cat nap - do it! Get the whole family involved and the little ones will be more likely to go down for their much needed nap without a fuss. If you’re a parent of a toddler, their one or two scheduled naps of the day are crucial to keeping everyone happy, but traveling and being off their normal routine can mess up their groove. To get a solid nap, make sure the room is completely dark with blackout curtains and of course the sound machine is on. These travel blackout curtains velcro to the window sidings without causing damage. I bring this travel set with me every time we travel!

3. Get Out of the House: Walk off that holiday meal with the people you love most! Getting fresh air will give you energy and count as your daily exercise. Looking for a more rigorous outdoor activity? Grab your family and play a game of flag football or a friendly game of soccer.

4. Give them Jobs: There are so many opportunities to give your little one(s) jobs and tasks during the holidays. They can set the table, unload/load the dishwasher, help fold laundry, and depending on their age, they can even prepare the food by mixing, stirring, and pouring ingredients together!

5. Pack Arts and Crafts: Keep your little one’s brain engaged while you’re away with arts and crafts. Simple activities such as coloring or painting will keep them busy (and happy)! Try a mess-free coloring book or an aqua art set that makes clean-up as easy as 1-2-3.

Whatever way you choose to celebrate the holidays, remember to keep love in your heart and patience at the front of mind. Create lasting memories and be grateful for all you have!
