What Mamas Really Want for Mother’s Day

Every year when Mother’s Day comes around, I scour the internet in search of a gift that would show my appreciation for all my mom does for me. Nothing seems to be enough, at least in my mind. From my search, I’ve come up with a list of unique Mother’s Day gift ideas to help you in your decision making this year.

  • Take mom somewhere that holds a memory. Maybe it’s a walk around your childhood town or visiting your family’s favorite restaurant.
  • Gift her an experience such as a trip to the salon, a manicure/pedicure, a night away in a luxury hotel, or a wine trail. These gifts allow mom to even bring along a friend if she wishes. What I love about these gifts is mom gets to choose when to use it and will think of you when she’s enjoying the experience!
  • Schedule a cleaning company to tidy and clean her house. We all know that mamas are usually in charge of the majority of the housework. Why not give her a break from the mundane?
  • The classic breakfast in bed. You can’t go wrong with this gift!
  • Spend some quality time at home with mom doing simple things she loves. Perhaps it’s watching her favorite show/movie, playing a board game, baking/cooking together, or sitting in the backyard enjoying a beverage.

If none of these ideas tickle your fancy, consider straight out asking your mama what she’d like for Mother’s Day! I’m sure she has some ideas. ;)

You may be wondering what I’m longing for this Mother’s Day. A break - that’s what I want. While I appreciate that some mothers hope for a beautiful bouquet of flowers, chocolates, or a spa gift set,  it’s the R&R for me. Time is so precious for moms. I wish for the gift of time to be on my own, in my own thoughts, and with the opportunity to relax. (OH! A handcrafted North Carolina hammock would do just perfectly in my backyard and would go a long way to helping me to relax. Just sayin’.) Relaxing is quite a challenge for me and I imagine most busy moms. We cram our brains with to-do lists for the whole family and are constantly burdened with the mental load.

So, if you’re feeling stuck about what to get the amazing mother-figures in your life this year, remember a few things…

  • Try an experience (recreate a memory, tickets to a concert, mani/pedi gift card, etc.)
  • Take something off her plate (clean the house, get the groceries, fold the laundry, etc.)
  • Keep it simple (breakfast in bed, quality time at home, etc.)

When all else fails, remember that gifting her rest and time to herself goes a long way!  Set up a sitter, take the kids out, or send her out and on her way (alone!).  Ensuring she can take care of herself means she will be better able to take care of everyone else.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone out there who identifies as a mother!
